DeLeo Senior Center 35 Harvard Street, Winthrop, MA 02152 Present: Kathy Dixon, Director, Council on Aging Absent: Alice Haskell, Chair Linda Cronin Kathy Driscoll Cynthia Huff Mary Vitale Helen Haddow Heather Martin Call to order at 10:35 AM by Alice Haskell, Chair I. Il. Approval of Minutes Motion to approve the Minutes of the January 12, 2023, meeting was made by Cynthia Huff and seconded by Mary Vitale and Linda Cronin. Minutes were approved. Announcements A. Alice Haskell reported that everything was in place for the Valentine’s Day Ice Cream Social on Monday, February 13, 2023. The ice cream has been donated by Twist and Shake, and all related items such as syrup, whipped cream, strawberries, etc. are being donated by the Market Basket in Chelsea. Alice Haskell and Sheila Hagen, our Programs Coordinator, will be the point people and will oversee the preparations and set up for this event. B. Alice Haskell reported that 20 pizzas are being donated by various local businesses (i.e. House of Pizza; Nick’s; Luigi’s in Beachmont, etc.) for the St. Patrick’s Day Pizza Party scheduled for Wednesday, March 15, 2023. It was thought it would be nice to indicate at the event which businesses had donated the pizzas. Kathy Dixon will check to see how many people have signed up to attend in order to determine if any more pizzas will be needed. Ii. Director’s Comments A. Kathy Dixon reported that, as we had discussed at last month’s meeting, letters had been sent to the members of the Council on Aging who have been absent from most or all of the recent meetings to inform them that they will be removed from the Council on Aging if they continue to no longer attend. Kathy reported that Nancy McHugh, Vice Chair, Traci Cuccinotta, Secretary, and Barry Yaffee, Member, have left the Council on Aging. Kathy Dixon reported that many of our appliances have been breaking. It is hoped that the electronic door openers for the restroom doors will be fixed next week. She reported that there are three ovens in our kitchen, and at the moment, none of them are working. Dennis Boudrow contacted someone he knew who said he would send someone next week to look at these. Kathy Dixon reported that while our new freezer is working well, our refrigerator is now not working. She contacted J. Cooling who ordered a new part and put in a new fan; the fan is not working correctly, so it is not possible to keep the correct temperature in the refrigerator. Kathy indicated that she can spend $200 from the Friends without approval, but she may need more for these repairs and may have to ask Matt for a check. Kathy Dixon reported that this month she allowed the pedicurist/manicurist who comes to the center every month to use the Arts and Crafts room this month instead of the small room near the restrooms she usually uses, as she needs a sink for her services. After the pedicurist/manicurist left, Kathy discovered clipped nails all over the room and had to sanitize the room. Linda Cronin, who is a Registered Nurse with a Certification in Infectious Disease, offered to speak to the pedicurist/manicurist about this in order to adhere to health standards and prevent this from happening again. Kathy suggested that perhaps using a screen to contain the area where the nail clipping was taking place could be a possible solution. Kathy Dixon reported she had raised the issue of our roof leaks at the recent Department Head Meeting. There has been a large barrel with a plastic trash bag in the Men’s Room to catch the water leaking from the roof into that room. She reported that there was no more money in the budget for this. Rich Cifuni said he had gotten an estimate for repairs of $32,000 and would look into finding money to fix the leaks. Kathy Dixon reported that the Senior Center hours have now gone back to the original hours of 8:30 to 3:30. She reported that the dining-in lunch program has resumed on a two day a week basis, but so far there have not Iv. been many people utilizing this. She reported that the Grab and Go lunch program continues to be very popular and well-utilized. F. Kathy Dixon reported that Senator Lydia Edwards will be hosting an office hour/coffee hour at the Senior Center on February 14, 2023, from 1-2 PM. Adjournment There being no further business, a Motion was made by Alice Haskell and seconded by Cynthia Huff that the meeting be adjourned. The meeting was adjourned by Alice Haskell at 11:35 AM. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 9, 2023, at 10:30 AM. Respectfully Submitted Kathy Driscoll Member, Council on Aging Adopted by the Board at the meeting of March 9, 2023 Alice Haskell, Chair Winthrop Council on Aging
