Winthrop Tree Committee Meeting
August Minutes
Meeting August 21, 2023 6 PM
In attendance
Paul O’Donnell Tree Warden
Chris Aiello Chair
Tom Derderian Member
Tim Duplin Member
Marie Wynne Member
1. Water Tank procurement discussion
2. Tree Donations and Tree Requests- requested of the Tree Warden to get a copy of the list
from Steve Calla (DPW) Are we tracking citizens that are looking for tree plantings?
3. Discussion of our Tree Farm and materials that may be needed for overwintering..
Possibility of using wood chips from the DPW to help insulate the trees from the cold dduring
the winter. There will be a need for large pots in the spring to start new trees.
4. Discussion around possibility of trimming and/or removing several distressed trees. One
particular tree is gnarled about cable lines. If it is within 10 feet of the power lines, the town will
not touch it and the Tree Warden advised that Comcast will not trim. They will only replace the
downed lines.
5. The Chair proposed to form two subcommittees:
The fi rst subcommittee would look at making multi year tree planting recommendations. This
would help to prioritize where town trees go.
Tim Duplin and Chris Aeillo will serve on the Multi Year Tree Planting subcommittee.
The second subcommittee will look at a list of trees that work as “sidewalk trees” as well as
species of trees that can be planted under wires ie: trees with limited height requirements. This
was not done previously and has resulted in “topping” trees as they begin to gain height.
Tom Derderian and Tim Duplin will serve on the Tree Suitability and Sustainability
subcommittee.
The next Tree Committee Meeting will be September 11th at 6 pm at the DPW Building
