Winthrop Commission on Disability MINUTES Meeting Date: April 23, 2025 Commission Members In Attendance: John Morgan Andrew Carr Kathleen Kane Karla Murphy Nancy Tufo Susan Smith Denise Quist Public: Karin Chavis (Citizen Finance Committee) 1. Roll call 2. No minutes from March meeting 3. CAM Training • The Community Access Monitor (CAM) Program trains people to survey buildings for accessibility and use their skills to advocate for compliance with various rules and regulations. • Karla participated in the March CAM training offered through Massachusetts Office of Disability (MOD) which was 10 hours over two days • Andrew and John Morgan are registered for the May training • Karla gave an overview of the training and what it entailed • WCOD could develop a program to self-assess municipal buildings in Winthrop using the MOD guide and using interns from Winthrop High School and North Shore Community College 4. MOD Grant • WCOD would like to stay involved throughout the process in an advisory role • Denise will update us on the grant; RFPs were going out 5. ADA Anniversary Event • It was agreed that planning an event would be too time-consuming and it’s doubtful that there would be good attendance • Instead, we will release notices on social media commemorating the anniversary, and perhaps Hannah can help get an article into the Transcript; Susan volunteered to write an article 6. Speaker Series • March: Transitioning to Adulthood event at the high school was poorly attended but was very informative; we connected to the SEPAC; it was difficult accessing the school and a parent called the next day saying she could not get into the building; members agreed not to hold any more events at the school • April: Staying in Your Home at the Senior Center; BCIL presented; it was very well attended and people had a lot of questions • Commission members agreed that we should continue with the Speaker Series and suggested the following topics: o ADUs o Special Needs Trusts o ABLE Account o Accommodations 7. Guest for May Meeting Invite Peg Lyons to talk about Housing 8. Facebook page for WCOD Difficult to sustain because the page is connected to a person’s personal FB account and if that person leaves, it can be transferred but can be a complex process; we can post on the town’s FB page and TM’s blog NEXT MEETING: May 21, 2025 Respectfully submitted, Karla Murphy
