Minutes from the
Public Health, Safety and Public Works Subcommittee
Date: April 7, 2026
Time: 4:00 PM – 5:15 PM
Location: Harvey Hearing Room
Participants: Marty Finn, Paul Readon, Suzanne Swope (Chair)
Meeting Overview
The meeting primarily focused on National Grid's proposal to install a new electrical pole
on Pauline Street . This installation is required to provide three-phase power to a new
condominium building at 22 Pauline Street and other surrounding apartments.
Project Details
National Grid clarified that the work involves two distinct projects:
• Pauline Street Pole Installation: This requires installing a new pole and
removing a tree located between existing poles. National Grid has committed to
planting a new tree of reasonable size as a replacement.
• Fire Station Wire Realignment: A second project involves removing wires
currently attached to a tree behind the fire station. The Committee will meet
again to discuss the specific details of this project.
Committee Actions & Discussion
• Motion Passed: The Committee passed a motion recommending approval of the
Pauline Street pole installation. This project will extend electrical lines to serve
new developments while ensuring existing services remain uninterrupted.
• Double Pole Concerns: The Committee addressed "double pole" issues—
where multiple utilities share the same pole. National Grid explained their
coordination process with Verizon and other providers using the NJU-N-S
system.
• Procedural Improvements: Members discussed the need for clearer protocols
regarding which party is responsible for coordinating the removal of third-party
equipment following pole replacements.
Recommendation:

Please see the attached motion, which concludes with a positive recommendation
from the Committee.
